Welding Cast Iron Procedure

Cast iron welding calls for some special procedures. This is a challenging task and there can be no two opinions about it. Cast iron, unlike other steel, carbon levels are much greater in 2 to 4 percent. This causes the most cast iron becomes brittle making it difficult to weld. If the following procedure is followed, cast iron can be welded with relative ease:

Use either the cooling or heating when welding cast iron because it is important to keep the cast iron from 150-500 degrees F range. Preheating is widely favored, but there are times when cooling is also performed. But still good cooling or heating, and not try to change in the middle of the welding. Although preheating the cast iron should be sufficient, it is preferable to heat the entire casting slowly and evenly in the 500 - to 1,200 degrees F. range Be careful to heat in the range expressed as overheating can cause the metal to crack. Casting should get only as far as hot as you can to touch comfortably with bare hands. If necessary, make a short welded intermittently to avoid overheating. The appearance of small cracks when welding cast iron, can not be avoided. You can apply some sealing compound to prevent leakage. If there are major cracks you have to fix the studding. Studding is a complex process that calls for many skills. The first step is to drill and tap holes in the sloping surface. The next step is to put in a steel latch and latch should be out 5 to 6 mm above the surface and then be welded studs to remain in place.

Las heated can easily be done - especially for small and manageable objects. While welding cast iron without preheating, it is imperative operator has good control over the welding gun and make welds as small as possible. Cast iron welding with arc welder calls for different procedures. As a matter of fact, people are able to weld cast iron with an arc welder few in number and there is great demand for these skilled people. You may have to either buy or rent a SMAW (shielded metal arc welding or stick electrode) welders depending on how often you cast iron welding with arc welder. Plug your welder to a 220V power outlet and then plug in the cable and ground wire welder to welder electrode holder. Note that for welding cast iron, you need a special electrode. You can buy a 770 stick electrode for welding cast iron.

First of all, clean the surface area to be welded with a wire brush. Clamp the cable clamp to the grounding of a piece of welder to weld cast iron. After that, place the electrode into the electrode holder and welding electrode position near the weld should be started. Continue to press the electrodes on to the bow is made of cast iron and began to weave the stick electrode from side to side. Make it a point to keep the bow slightly away from the piece you are welding steel. Wait a few minutes to weld to cool off gradually. Use a hammer to chip from welding slag from the weld.
