Safety And Health of Welders

Welding and Cutting can be a very dangerous occupation or past. With this said, I intend to give me some professional advice, and a special heart-felt plea! Please! Before starting any type of welding or cutting operations, you are responsible for your safety and the safety of others around the operation. So, what should you do first in order to maintain safety? First, make sure the welding equipment is installed properly in accordance with the National Electrical Code and any state and local codes and regulations. Make sure it is properly based and in good working condition. A good source for welders to have a copy of the NEC code book.

Next, you have to dress for success. Un-like some of the popular cable show, you should always wear protective clothing suitable for welding to be done. Never weld, grind, or cut without the proper safety glasses approved by ANSI Z49.1, even under your hood while welding. You only get one pair of eyes, so it is very important to take care of them.

Now, before doing any welding, the first thing you should do? Answer: Always look for the area at least 35 feet looking for a highly flammable, volatile materials, or explosives. Make sure the work area is clean and free of hazards. If it is necessary to splice welding cable lengths together, make sure all electrical connections tight and isolated. Do not use the cord with frayed spots, cracks or naked in isolation. Wire stubs on the floor is a safety hazard. Therefore, always discard electrode stubs in an appropriate container. When welding, keep your head out of fumes. Use mechanical exhaust at the point of welding each weld steel brass, bronze, lead, cadmium, chromium, manganese, zinc, or galvanized. When the electrode holder or torch is not in use, hang on brackets. Do not let it come in contact with compressed gas cylinders. Speaking of gas cylinders, always handle them with extreme care. remain closed when not in use. Ensure compressed gas cylinders are always secured to a wall or other structural supports. When transporting compressed gas cylinders they always have to be in a vertical position and secure, not lying horizontally on the back of a pick up truck. When a compressed gas cylinder is empty, close the valve and marked "EMPTY" cylinder.

Obviously, there are many hazards when welding. Space is limited so dangerous, so take special precautions, have someone ready to pull you out if you get resolved. Do not weld on containers that have held fuel without taking special precautions. Do not weld on closed containers or compartments without giving vent and take special precautions. Do not weld around the degreasing operation. While working on the ground, make sure that the scaffolding, ladders, or solid surface work and properly secured. If you work in high places without fences, always use a safety belt or life line. Another problem is electricity and water in the same area is a potential hazard. When using a water-cooled equipment, always check for leaks.

If you're welding in damp or wet areas, wear rubber boots and stand on the stage. Make sure you read and understand all applicable Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) which can be used in welding applications. Make sure you use a lens color according to your welding helmet with a clear lens on the outside to protect the shaded lens. American Welding Society has a number system for lens based on the amount of amperage you weld with. The higher the number the higher the amperage, for example, 8,9,10, 11, 12, 13, 14, etc. A lens 8 or 9 will be much lighter than the 12. Be sure to have your eyes checked at least once a year and if you need prescription glasses, wear them. Arc burns are not fun so make sure your eyes are protected and skin all covered up. It only takes about 15-20 minutes of arc which is about 10,000 degrees F, the skin is exposed, to produce severe burns. So always be careful.

It is important to remember to protect others from the beam of light produced by arc welding. People who are not used to being around the welding arc not understand that staring with eyes covered to hurt them, they tend to be fascinated by the bright light associated with welding. Always follow lockout / Tagout procedure and if at your job and you have a supervisor, informed him immediately of any problems or potential hazards. These are some life threatening situations you may experience as a welder, so always, always, be educated and prepared. If you add weld to their type of industry or manufacturing, is now becoming even more dangerous and there is a danger even more to consider. So, as you all can see the welding dangerous, however, if you follow the rules, you need to have a safe and enjoyable career or hobby.
